Having your first child is an amazing experience. As Jerry Seinfeld once quipped, it is making your own people. But it is the type of experience that requires some preparation and thought before the big day arrives. The truth is that even though a female body is designed to carry and deliver a child, the mind is not always as easy. So what needs to be done to ensure that the big day is all that you want it to be? What sort of preparation needs to be done and who needs to be involved? Here are some things that out to be considered, long before the first contractions hit you.

It’s all about partnerships

It might be an obvious thing to say but childbirth is all about partnerships. From the outset when you are conceiving to the end when you are delivering, it is important to do it with the right people. In this regard it is important to find a doctor who you like, who listens to you and with whom you feel comfortable. You will need a good specialist so find a good obstetrician Melbourne has plenty – but find the one who is the best fit for you. If you don’t have one already speak to friends and here about their experiences and then try to contact somebody who comes highly recommended.

Prepare

If you have never delivered a child before it is hard to imagine the feelings that you are going to go through on the day. These will be both physical and mental and these will apply to both the parents – not just the one doing the pushing. And because you have never had this experience before, the problem is that it is hard to know what is normal and what isn’t. So attend ante-natal classes, research on line, talk to people who have done it before you and gather as much information on the big day as possible. Remember, you are not asking people how to do it, that is something that you need to decide for yourself but listen and observe and then decide on how you want to do it.

Make a plan

Based on the above it is important to have an actual birth plan. And importantly, don’t just formulate a plan, communicate the plan to everyone involved. If your midwife or your doctor or even your husband don’t know what the plan is, then it cannot be followed and you won’t get the experience that you want.
