Healthy skin has always been an indicator of physical well being of an individual. The amount of collagen our body withhold ensures the kind of skin we have. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein, which is found in copious amount in our body. This particular protein is the strongest of all and is formed by the winding and cross-linking of amino acid.

Incidentally, Collagen makes up an approximate of 75 percent of our total skin weight. Apart from assisting the skin cells to repair damage, Collagen also keeps our skin moist and supple. The smoothness and firmness of skin are directly proportional to the collagen levels in our body. Higher the collagen level, softer and firmer our skin becomes. However, as we grow old, our bodies’ ability to produce collagen gradually starts to slow down until it stops completely. Thus, our skin becomes fragile and allows the formation of wrinkles.

Many believe that our skin can absorb collagen if applied topically. This is completely untrue and can be considered a modern-day myth. In reality, collagen is a large sized protein molecule, which prevents it from entering the lower layers of our skin. The only way to boost collagen production in our body at the later stages of our life is through diet. Consumption of collagen yielding food items, such as the Korean Red Ginseng will invariably increase collagen count in our body and help retain and maintain healthy skin.

Ginseng, A Natural Remedy For Collagen Production

Korean Red Ginseng, also known as Asian Ginseng or Red Panax Ginseng, is an adaptogenic perennial herb with fleshy roots. The key element behind this miraculous herb is called  Saponins, commonly known as ginsenosides, is an active compound of the plant. The ginsenosides are singularly responsible for the many health benefits Panax Ginseng is famous for. Scientists and researchers have been successful in isolating 40 different kinds of ginsenosides from the ginseng extract.

Ginseng, especially Asian Ginseng is a well-known adaptogen, Apart from its potent healing properties, the Red Panax Ginseng also acts as an anti-oxidant and anti-depressant for many people. Among its many virtues, it is also lauded for its ability to boost collagen production in our body.

Ginseng and Its Collagen Yielding Qualities

The modern day beauty and skincare market consider Red Korean Ginseng to be a potent and game-changing natural element. People these days are more inclined to adopt natural practices for maintaining optimum health and skin care, rather than depending on chemical cosmetology. This renewed interest has made Red Panax Ginseng widely known all over the world for its collagen boosting properties. The many qualities of the plant which lead people to use it as a natural alternative for skin care have been discussed below.

Skin Toning And Firming

There are three primary components of skincare, namely cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. Incidentally, Ginseng acts as an effective toner and freshener for our skin. Studies have found that the Korean Red Ginseng boosts the production of Type 1 collagen in our blood flow, which in turn makes our skin firmer, smoother, and wrinkle-free. Researchers found that Asian Ginseng stimulates fibroblast production in our skin dermis which then leads to the increase of Type 1 collagen in the bloodstream. (1)

Anti-aging Properties

Reduction of Type 1 collagen level in our bloodstream results in sagging of skin and wrinkle formation. Red Panax Ginseng comes with anti-aging properties and also assists our body to heal wound faster. Moreover, being a caffeine-free food item it invariably protects the skin from black spot formation, photo-aging, and dryness.

In a 2017 study, researchers from Biospectrum Life Science Institute looked into the anti-aging properties of Panax Ginseng on human volunteers and found that the plant extracts boosted collagen synthesis. Furthermore, they also noted that there was a decrease in the depth of crow’s feet wrinkles in the participants of the study. (2)

Ginseng, a Free Radical Scavenger

Korean Red Ginseng is a popular anti-oxidant, which are known to prevent inflammation and collagen loss. Ginseng, similar to a true anti-oxidant, acts as a radical neutralizer and prevents the attack of reactive oxygen species, reducing osteoporosis and joint pains. Furthermore, the elimination of dead skin cells also improves the existing complexion of an individual.

Protection Against UV Radiation

UV or ultraviolet rays are known to break down collagen found in the skin dermis, causing them to form irregular elastin fibers, leading to the formation of incorrect wrinkles. According to a 2013 study, Korean researchers concluded that Red Panax Ginseng can protect our skin from sun damage and can also help us attain a smooth freckle-free skin tone. The researchers shared that Korean Red Ginseng extracts not only offered UV radiation protection but also stimulated procollagen type I formation in the skin dermis. (3)

Treatment Of Skin Conditions

While most of the studies focused on the anti-aging and collagen forming abilities of Korean Red Ginseng, some others explored the ginsenosides’ capability of healing skin problems including atopic dermatitis and melisma. A couple of researchers from Korea University College of Medicine conducted a study in 2011, which looked into the efficacies of Red Panax Ginseng for the treatment of Atopic Dermatitis. The study undertook thirty patients suffering from eczema as volunteers and asked them to consume Korean Red Ginseng. At the end of 16 weeks, the researchers concluded that significant improvement was noted in the study participants after they consumed Ginseng. (4)

Skincare is an essential part of our healthcare on which we spend most of our time and money. Dermatologists are increasingly advising people to use Red Korean Ginseng as it is an effective collagen booster and has been proved to have anti-aging properties as well. Being a natural skin care alternative, the plant extract comes with zero to minimal side effect and also acts as an excellent healing agent for skin conditions.
